I used to view life, and its many facets, as a journey with a beginning, middle and end – which, is the destination. In a way, this metaphor remains unspoiled, except that my view about “arriving” at the destination may have suffered a long and painful complication.
It’s but natural to feel a ‘sense of arriving’ at an end, such as after we finished a job, project, resolved a problem or achieved a milestone. Indeed it’s nice and even healthy to end something on a celebratory note or at least on a restful, insightful note when we find it pleasing to look back and remember the pains, laugh at our mistakes and even imagine the “what could have beens” had we done things differently..
But wait. It’s not finished yet. In fact, it’s never finished at all. There’s always a next page, a next chapter, a next volume. There’s even a ‘remake’, when we do something totally new yet ineptly repeat many of our classic mistakes.
With experience comes the suspicion that in the grand scale of things, the journey never really ends...
Being not the suspicious type, I took the next step and just make it a point to live by this constant spoiler warning in my head: something’s coming…look out!
..and I mean that with a mixed sense of anxiety and excitement.
