THE PENTAGON PLANS TO PROMOTE LEFT BEHIND VIDEO GAMES TO TROOPS IN IRAQ?

This piece from liberal/left political commentary site BTCNews should not really come as a surprise in the government of George W. Bush but really, this is just too much. Then again, I though it must be a sick joke, yet The Nation has a similar story in its blog.

The Nation says…

As an official arm of the Defense Department's America Supports You program, Operation Straight Up (OSU) plans to mail copies of the controversial apocalyptic video game, Left Behind: Eternal Forces to soldiers serving in Iraq. OSU is also scheduled to embark on a "Military Crusade in Iraq" in the near future.

First off, just what is the Left Behind: Eternal Forces video game about? Based on the equally controversial, no-brainer, Left Behind fiction series, the video game takes for the worse…

Newsweek once described the game this way:

“The game revolves around New Yorkers who are “left behind” after the rapture. Players scour the streets for converts, training them into a work force to feed, shelter and join a paramilitary resistance against the growing forces of the Antichrist.

Left Behind Games CEO Troy Lyndon, whose company went public in February, says the game’s Christian themes will grab the audience that didn’t mind gore in the movie ‘The Passion of the Christ.’…”

Radical Congruency, however, puts it more succinctly in describing the scenario of the game…

-The rapture has happened, so all the Christians are gone
-A bunch of people realize the error of their ways, and immediately become Christians after the rapture
-For some reason, it becomes necessary to blast the unrepentant to bits and hasten the destruction of the world
-Guns. Lots of guns.

The site further says …

The idea of religious video games that celebrate the death and eternal destruction of non-adherents - worse yet, that makes their annhiliation the primary task of the Christian community - raises my abhorrence for the Left Behind phenomenon to a level of utter disgust that I previously reserved only for racism and genocide.”

I say, Amen to that!

I have been hired by LEFT BEHIND GAMES for the purpose of STATING THE TRUTH about the game. Contrary to what people are saying who want to bash Christianity or Religion, the LEFT BEHIND games are the first games in history whereby the use of PRAYER and WORSHIP is more powerful than the use of GUNS. Isn’t this a good thing? There is NO convert or die! You lose the game for focusing on killing! But unfortunately, the fact that we do not ban guns in the game is a wrongful interpretation that we encourage them. After all, what teenage gamers these days want a game without a gun? Isn’t it better to show them how their use is not effective, is destructive and will eventually cause you to lose? So, please, be a RESPONSIBLE BLOGGER and find out the truth about this GREAT GAME FOR OUR YOUTH before saying another word about it. SEE IT FOR YOURSELF. Then, we welcome any CONSTRUCTIVE criticism so we can improve the game further every year. Thank you.

The fact that gamers even have the option to use guns betrays the fact that the game is unbiblical and serve only as a graphic example of graphic pseudo-christianity. Even if you just read the bible for entertainment, you'd realize that guns are simply useless in a war that is spiritual... they simply don't deserve to be part of the arsenal of a true Christian.

If the people who hired you were just truly studying the Bible instead of thinking of ways to make money off of it, they should have noticed that Christian triumph does not depend on physical survival at all. Martyrdom will be the lot of many who will ultimately be saved, so why should gamers have any vested interest in fighting to survive... especially if they are truly among the remnants? Indeed dying for faith should make winners of gamers, immediately..!

michael, just tell the company who hired you to be responsible business people. tell them they should not come up with a stupid game and pretend that they are doing it to tell the youth of the superiority of prayers over guns! You must realize how laughable that proposition is...

If they really want to improve the game, all they need do is DELETE it. Then look for more decent ways to earn money.

why do they actually have to make the GAME a religious one? why not just make it an action-packed/thriller/suspense/whatever?! kind of game? at least they can justify using violence.. why not just make a game like Die Hard or from the Bourne Series.. it sure has to have lots of guns, bombs, knives, hovercrafts, and action stuff.. they're sure to attract lots of gamers..

are they thinking that by adding a "religious" color to the game will attract more "Christian" (?!) gamers?!

hmm..
